Face to Face, with Daniel Deus (2015)
This body of work began as an observation of those around me during the grieving process of my best friend Matthew Gorrill, who lost his life in 2011—to whom I dedicated this exhibition.
What became increasingly evident to me during this time was how the concept of one’s “identity” was not concrete as I had understood, but fluid. I was struck by the ease of which one's identity shifted through the lens of others, how drastic ones identity was shaped by the individual and their experiences. I was interested in exploring how identity could be shaped, and to what extent these notions could be misconstrued, misinterpreted, or misremembered.
This work set out to question how one’s identity is truly defined, by offering two portraits presented alongside a series of text-based works. The text-based works provided the viewer with fragmented statements, which consisted of a mix of true and false statements. These works were meant to to aid in the creation of the subject’s identity--like a pre-constructed word bank for a game of MadLibs.
